mother and daughter, dentist visit, children's dentist, family dentist Preparing for the school year isn’t easy. It seems as if the shopping doesn’t stop: clothes, shoes, and school supplies. One thing you may not have thought about — are your kids’ mouths in good shape to take on the new school year? Their smile should be strong, shining, and should make them feel confident walking into their classroom. If you’ve checked off the back-to-school shopping list but haven’t taken your kids to the dentist lately, it’s time to catch up with their children’s dentistry in Worthington. Our office not only works to get their smile gleaming and bright, but also offers great dental tips to help your family survive the school year with healthy teeth.

Is Dental Care on Your Back-To-School List?

When it comes to preparing for school health-wise, dental examinations and cleanings should be on your to-do list. Reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that tooth decay affects U.S. children more than any other chronic disease. Especially with the processed foods and drinks that are so easy to get a hold of outside of the house, you must protect their teeth as much as possible. In fact, your kids could end up missing important days of school from dental pain and oral health issues if they skip their preventive care appointments.

Tips to help ensure your child’s continued dental health:

  • Schedule your child’s regular dental examination to diagnose and treat or prevent dental problems before they become a problem later on this school year.
  • Ask Dr. LJ about preventive sealants and fluoride treatments to strengthen and further protect their teeth from decay.
  • Make sure your kids are brushing regularly with fluoride-enriched toothpaste and flossing every day.
  • While you are shopping for back-to-school items, consider buying several toothbrushes at once. This way, your kids can change them out every three months. You also should consider changing brushes after a cold or illness.
  • Be sure to provide your kids with healthy lunches and snacks. If you pack their lunches, include whole grain bread with their sandwich; milk, yogurt, or a cheese stick to provide them with some dairy; and raw vegetables or fruit, which are often easy to pack. If your child enjoys the provided school lunches, review healthy, balanced food choices with them each morning before school. Try to limit the amount of sugary foods and soft drinks your kids consume. Water is always a good choice.
  • Does your child play sports? Ask our office about custom mouthguards for the student athletes in your family. Most dental emergencies take place because of a sports-related injury. Before you’re frantically searching for a “dentist near me” online, get prepared and protect their teeth.
