How To: Take Care of Your Dentures
January 23, 2025

Dentures are a tried-and-true tooth-replacement solution that has benefited greatly from the latest advancements in technology and dentistry. Now, they look great, feel comfortable, and allow patients to enjoy a varied, well-balanced diet again. But how long do dentures last, exactly? They can actually last for upwards of a decade with the right best practices in place. Here are a few!
1. Handle Your Dentures with Care
Although dentures are only made with the best dental materials, they aren’t completely indestructible. That’s why patients are encouraged to take certain precautions, like cleaning their restoration over a soft towel or a sink filled with water. That way, if you accidentally drop them in the process, there is a significantly lower chance that they will break.
2. Clean Your Dentures Each Morning and Evening
In order to keep your dentures in pristine condition, you need to get in the habit of cleaning them each morning and evening. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste is important because you don’t want small scratches to surface, negatively impacting the overall appearance of your restoration. As always, if you’re not sure which products to use, you can ask your dentist!
3. Soak Your Dentures While You Sleep
Soaking your dentures each night won’t just help prevent stains and odor; it will also help with blood circulation and reduce your risk of getting pneumonia. So, make sure to take them out each night before you go to bed! You can put them in a clean glass of water or, if your dentures need a deeper clean, you can soak them in a dentist-recommended cleaner so they are fresh come morning!
4. Care for Your Natural Teeth Too
Remember, the health of your gums and any remaining teeth you have is important too. That’s why patients are encouraged to continue implementing a good oral hygiene regimen at home. Then, every six months, visit your dentist so they can conduct a comprehensive oral exam, assess the condition of your denture, and screen for oral cancer before the dental hygienist cleans your teeth.
